Teach Me to Love

One of the most important prayers I ever learned to pray was “Teach me.” No matter what the topic, uttering those two simple words brought such great revelation every time. I have asked Him: “Teach me about prayer”; “Teach me about healing”; “Teach me about grace”; “Holy Spirit, teach me about God”. And the things I am sharing now on love came after uttering the words, “Teach me about love.”

King David uttered this phrase many times throughout the Psalms. “Teach me thy way, O LORD” (Psalm 86:11, KJV). And the Bible says that he was a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). One of the disciple’s said to Jesus, “Teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1; KJV) and we ended up with a prayer we still pray today – the Lord’s Prayer.

In John 14:26 Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit would be sent to us and that He would teach us all things. Ask Him to teach you.

One of my favorite scriptures (I say that about most of the Bible) is John 8:38. In the Amplified Bible it reads, “I tell the things which I have seen and learned at My Father’s side.” In Luke 10 we read the account of two sisters, Mary and Martha. One sister, Martha, spent all her time serving the Lord, but she hardly knew Him or His ways. The other sister, Mary, “sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.” And Jesus said that Mary had chosen the “good part” (KJV) or the “good portion [that which is to her advantage]” (Amp).

Do you really want to know about His ways? Do you really want to learn His high way of love? Sit with Him. Sit with His word – the Bible, His instruction manual. Ask Him to teach you about Love. Learn about Love at your Father’s side.

  1. You gave me this advice quite some time ago. I’ve used it and passed it on. What crucial words these are as we listen to their simplicity and yet what follows is so profound. Love you.
