Sweet Sleep

It is futile for you – who rise up early, who sit up late, who eat the bread of sorrows – for indeed – He gives His beloved ones restful sleep. (Psalm 127:2, Tehillim)

When you lie down, you shall not be afraid; yes, you shall lie down, and your sleep shall be sweet. (Proverbs 3:24, Amplified)

I tossed and turned last night. I couldn’t get comfortable. I couldn’t seem to relax. The thoughts kept coming. Not bad thoughts, but not restful thoughts. Then I heard His voice.

All other thoughts suddenly were silenced. What did He just say? He gives His beloved sweet sleep?

I began to think about this simple statement. What caught my attention was the word beloved. There are scriptures that speak of sleep and the laborer, but those are not the ones He spoke to my heart in the middle of a so far sleepless night.

What He spoke to my heart was that He had sweet, restful sleep for me tonight simply because He loves me. And those words took me by the hand and led me into a night of sweet, restful sleep.

Here is this simple truth stated in The Message translation of Psalm 127:2.

“Don’t you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves?

He enjoys it because He loves you. Selah.
