God Is Good

This past Sunday the message at our church was on the goodness of God. The pastor read from Psalm 27:13 which states, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living” (KJV).

The pastor spoke about a recent trip he took with an evangelist friend to do some meetings in the streets of New York. The evangelist was constantly noticing the good things that happened to them. Things other people would not have noticed. Things that others would have taken for granted. But this evangelist would proclaim the goodness of God at every opportunity.

God is good. We must believe to see it in this land and proclaim it when we do. “O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever… Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men” (Psalm 107:1, 8; KJV). The words ‘mercy’ and ‘goodness’ in these scriptures are both the Hebrew word hesed which refers to God’s unfailing love.

Now I’d like to praise God for His goodness, His mercy, His hesed, His unfailing love and proclaim it to you.

Last night as my husband and I drove home from a dinner with friends, we noticed a young girl about 9 years-old walking down a busy street in our city. It’s not the kind of street you would expect to see a young child walking on alone and especially not at night. My husband noticed that she didn’t have any shoes on. The whole thing just seemed odd. We decided to keep an eye on her and alert the police.

We watched as she continued to walk down this road. Heading into an area that a child should not be in alone at night. Heading toward a major freeway. We watched her as we spoke to the police on our cell phone giving them directions to her location. Finally, the police arrived and we were told that they would call us if they needed anything.

A short time later we received a call from a policeman. He told us that the little girl had been lost for two hours and was a very long way from home. Her mother had just picked her up and wanted the police to thank us for calling them about her little girl.

My husband and I rejoiced over this girl being found instead of becoming a statistic. We talked about God having us at the right place at the right time. My husband happened to come home early from work that day. Our friends called us out of the blue to have dinner with them. We went to a restaurant we had given them gift cards to about a month ago. Everything lined up for us to be where that little girl was that night.

Coincidence? I really don’t think so. I think Love Himself placed us there and Love Himself moved on us to do something about the situation. As I laid my head down on my pillow last night, I couldn’t help thinking about a little girl, who had been lost, that was now laying her head down on her pillow for the night. And I couldn’t help thinking that God is so good.
